If you buy a bike from a store such as that … you’ll wind up taking it to a shop (bicycle shop) to get it fixed by summer’s end. Why not just start at the bike shop and get a good bike that fits and is adjusted correctly? You’ll be happier and far better off.

None of the discount stores or the department stores have a real mechanic putting bikes together. Things are not adjusted or tuned up and you will have problems with loose spokes, maladjusted spokes and wheels, gear shifters and breaks. Plus, there is a great chance that the bike won’t even fit whomever it is purchased for.

While a solar heated and solar electric home means you’re not producing CO2 from burning natural gas or oil to heat the house, or using any electricity from the grid for lighting or other uses, you can’t just go slap on solar panels and expect the house to work.

A solar house needs to be built, from the ground up, with energy efficiency in mind. That means:
- Maximizing insulation and air sealing
- Maximizing solar thermal input in cold months and minimizing it in hot months (by having large south and west facing windows with large overhangs for example)
- Minimizing the energy use of appliances and lighting within the home.

Solar panels change light into electricity, and do NOT store power.

You need a solar panel capable of enough power to keep the light on all night. And that may be 6 hours of sun and 12 hours of dark.

Then you need a set of batteries large enough to hold that energy. And a charge controller to regulate the charge into the batteries. And then a light that will operate on the battery voltage, say 12 volts.

This is probably not practical due to the large solar panel required, and the large batteries. But here is a few numbers. Assume a 100 watt light at 12 volts. Assume you get at least 6 hours of sun every day and the light will be on for 12 hours. That means the battery has to store 100*12=1200 watt hours. Divide by 12 and that is 100 amp-hours, a large auto battery size.

Allowing for 20% losses in the battery and circuitry, that means you nee 1400 watt hours from the solar panel. Since it has 4 hours to operate, that means it has to deliver 1400/4 = 350 watts at 15 volts.

So there it is: 350 watt panel
100 amp hour battery
charge controller sized for above
100 watt light.

If you have to allow for a day with no sun, then you need more batteries. Two nights means 2400 watt-hours, two batteries, a larger charge controller and a 2800/4 = 700 watt panel.

Cost: $400 for batteries
$200 for charge controller

How does photovoltaic (PV) (Solar) technology work?

PV takes advantage of the characteristics of impure silicon crystals. Pure silicon is not electrically active, because its atoms are locked into a solid crystal structure. There are no spare electrons, and no open spots for electrons. Silicon impurities create crystal with either a slight tendency to lose electrons or a slight tendency to attract them. When the two kinds of silicon are placed close together and exposed to sunlight, photons (particles of light) knock electrons loose on the unattractive side. An electrical current is created as electrons travel across the junction to the attractive side.

Sunlight is composed of particles of energy called photons. When sunlight strikes a PV material, photons will either pass through, be reflected, or be absorbed. If the photon is absorbed, its energy will be transferred to an electron in an atom of the PV material. With new energy, the electron is able to escape from its normal position in orbit around that atom. In this way, the electron can become part of, and augment, the current in an electrical circuit. This photovoltaic effect is the basic physical process through which sunlight is converted into electricity.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are made of similar materials and take advantage of the same physical principles, but in reverse. Powering LEDs with a PV panel works compatibly: photons in, electrons out; electrons in, photons out.
