Michael asks…
Acer computers? Anyone have one? How is it?
Looking at an Acer Desktop package. Want to know how they are as far as performance for everday use and photo storage.
Thanks!!

Alley answers:
Acer is actually a pretty big name in the computer market, I have a travelmate and it is honestly a good dependable laptop. The computer was cheaper and offered some pretty high end hardware so I snatched it up. If anything I would say Acer is your next best thing to building your own machine because they include very sizable hard drives and some of the best Intel processors so they are great for doing just that.

Donald asks…
how acer computers for gaming and storing music and are they reliable?

Alley answers:
Not really, you could make one with high enough specs to handle gaming, but they aren’t really made solely for gaming.
Try http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/

Helen asks…
Feedback on acer computers? Which one should I get?
I hear acer computers are reliable, rarely needing to be serviced. What are your opinions on them, if you have an acer? Which one should I get? I’d primarily want it for internet, word, burning cd’s/dvd’s, maybe watching movies, downloading music. But I don’t want to spend a ton either….

Alley answers:
Acer computers are pretty good. I was thinking about buying one myself. You can get internet, word processing, watch movies, burn CDs and DVDs. They work as well as any other computer. They are also great if you don’t want to spend a ton on money. And if you want to ever increase the hard drive, RAM, get new software, etc. You can always do that.

Thomas asks…
are acer computers good laptops?
i am thinking of buying me a acer laptop computer good brand or not?

Alley answers:
Acer has never been known for their quality

Carol asks…
Does anybody know anything about Acer laptop computers?
Are they any good or something I should avoid?
Someone told me they have a problem of overheating
Can someone recommend a good laptop for me to purchase?
Acer looked like pretty good value (cheap?) but I don’t know

Alley answers:
A Hewlett Packard salesman told me not to buy them
So what are you gonna do
I think he was bias
But Hewlett Packard is #1

Steven asks…
Why do you prefer Apple computers over Microsoft computers?
I hear so many people rant about how much “better” Apple Computers are than the rest of the Microsoft PC’s. But why is that? And if you are a NOT an Apple owner or don’t like Apple, why is that your preference too?

Alley answers:
Look mac is like a designer company people use it for 3 reasons durability design and to show it off simple as that i personally prefer windows because i like there performance and support but then again performance is what is in your computer so well if you have the right processor and ram simple things then mac is simply a company if your a smart buyer there are windows which work better then macs

Donald asks…
Does the might mouse only work with apple computers?
Hey I’m getting a new computer and its not an apple but i really want the wireless or wired mouse is it true that it only works with apple computers?

Alley answers:
It only works with macs . U can get really kl mouse by logitec

Ken asks…
What program takes the place of powerpoint for Apple computers?
I just got an Apple. I don’t know all of the features. And I’d also like to know what takes the place of microsoft word. Also what takes the place of I think its called art pad or something like that. Please only answer if you are experienced with computers.
One more question:
Why cant I see some movies on the internet??

Alley answers:
You can purchase MS Office for Mac, I believe the latest version is Office 2004. It includes PowerPoint. Or you can purchase iWork, which has presentation software called Keynote. It costs around $100.00 or so. You can also download NeoOffice, which is a free office suite for Mac that includes presentation software.

Linda asks…
Would GM be the “Apple Computers” of car makers if they continued to develop the EV-1 Electric Car in the 90s?
All these years later, GM could have been the market leader in Electric vehicles instead of begging for money from the Govt.
Could they have been the Apple computers of Electric Cars?

Alley answers:
They would be the packerd bell….

Daniel asks…
Is there ANY Verizon phone that will sync with Apple Computers?
We’re long-time Verizon customers, happy with service, not with phones. Main issue is that there does not seem to be a VZ phone tat will sync with our Apple computers (e.g. Contacts and Calendar – Music would be a real plus.) Although we would prefer an iPhone, something that will do the above might hold us with Verizon for another year or so.

Alley answers:
I don’t know of any software that Apple makes that will make it support Verizon but you may be able to find a third party software by googling for it.

George asks…
Does anyone know if The Creative Recreations sneakers come in kids sizes?
Im looking for a size 5.5 or 6

Alley answers:
I don’t know, but you can check out this cool site I ran across. It is www.cashsavingsolutions.com. Check out the Apparel section near the top of the screen.

Linda asks…
How do Creative Recreations fit?
I wear size 7 in Nikes, and 6.5 in Vans. So should I get size 7 for the CRs? HELP!

Alley answers:
I got my bf some for xmas and he’s a 9 or 9.5 in Nike. I got him a 9 in CRs and they fit but he says its a snug fit since the width isnt wide. I hope that makes sense. =)

Michael asks…
If we shop for recreation does that mean we’re not very creative?

Alley answers:
Yes.
When buying stuff becomes entertainment, you have cash management problems. You are just buying stuff to fill a desire. That desire will never be satiated with more stuff. And you risk doing it at the cost of your financial future.
You should have a budget for shopping, if you’re that way inclined. Set aside some of your income for saving and some of your income for shopping. That way, you don’t feel too deprived. Make sure you save 10% of your income, though.
Best wishes

Donald asks…
Does you school require students to have laptop computers?
Does your college/university require/mandate for all students to have a laptop computer? If so, does the school recommend at particular brand of laptop computer?
Actually, my college does require/mandate for all students to have a laptop computer. The school recommends that all students to get a D620 notebook laptop computer, which I’ve recently ordered from the Dell (Computer) Corporation.
Sorry about the typo in the question topic headline. The typo being that I said “you”, when I actually meant to say “your” but I simply forgot to add in the letter ‘r’ even though I thought I had but didn’t.

Alley answers:
Nope. They recommend Apple computers, though, as most of the school computers are Macs so it’s easier to integrate our computers with their systems.
I’m sure Dell payed your school payed a fair amount of money to recommend their laptops since there’s no reason it’s useful to have the same model of laptop as everyone else, just the same OS.

Mandy asks…
Are laptop computers bad for your health?
I have heard that men should not set laptops computers on their lap because their sperm can be damaged. Is that true? Do laptops have a negitive effect on women as well?

Alley answers:
As a matter of fact, this is true. It was reported in a recent Reader’s Digest in their Medical Updates section. No, they don’t affect women. The issue was the heat generated by the laptop causing a drop in sperm production. It is not a theory, but a fact. Of course, like so many things, two years from now they may come out with a study that says it isn’t as bad as they once thought.

Susan asks…
Do commercial airlines have power available for passenger laptop computers?
I will be traveling on Korean Airlines this year to Asia and would like to be able to use my laptop during the long flight from the US. Does Korean Airlines have power ports available for passengers to use in-flight at their assigned seat? If so, do I need a special adapter to plug my computer into this power? What adapter will I need? Thank you!

Alley answers:
Check www.seatguru.com for your airline and plane or flight, and it will tell you what seats have power outlets (if any) and what adapter you might need.

Donna asks…
2 questions regarding laptop computers on airlines?
I have a few questions regarding laptop computers on airlines. First, do they have a power source available (can you plug it in or must you rely solely on your battery)? Second, is there some sort of Internet access available in flight? I haven’t ridden a plane since before the computer age!

Alley answers:
Some airlines have a few power sources on some of their larger aircraft (that are generally used for longer flights) but generally there isn’t on most airplanes. As far as internet access, there isn’t on the plane and actually they will tell you to disable the wireless feature on your laptop before you take off. Most airport terminals do have wireless access though, and a few power outlets in the terminal, but often you have to pay a fee (it’s not free wireless in a lot of airports it’s like $5-8 usually for up to 24 hours of access, but chances are you’ll only have time to be using it for a few minutes so it’s not worth paying for).

Mary asks…
How to replace the RTC battery in laptop computers?
my laptop (toshiba, satellite 1405) is getting old and the real time clock battery is no longer rechargeable. so everytime I turn on the computer, the system clock is always changed back to 1999. I was wondering if I can change the battery myself, or do I have to take it to a computer store (and how much would that cost)? I heard that the RTC battery is a small button-like battery and is really cheap, but I didn’t see it when I opened the back of the laptop. Any idea? thanks a lot for your help.

Alley answers:
That battery looks like a big watch battery and they are pretty cheap. Usually they are located on the mainboard of the computer somewhere. On a laptop that’s likely deep inside it’s belly and hard to get at. You could try to take it apart further, just remember where all the screws go.
Sounds like you might need a new laptop. By brother got one for free from this place. There are a couple to choose from and they aren’t crappy ones. I’m working on getting mine right now. It’s not too difficult. Pretty painless really. Just sign up for 1 free trial or something from their list of things and then get a few other people to do the same.

Lizzie asks…
which is the best solar energy system to install for both domestic & comercial purpose and where can I get it?
I need specifications, catalogues, wiring diagrams, manufacturing/retails outlets,

Alley answers:
This is not a simple thing that a do-it-yourselfer can just do without a lot of study and work. Your best bet is probably to contact a solar installer near you and ask them for a free quote. In fact, contact several, and get competitive bids.
If you are still intent on trying it yourself, try Googling “photovoltaic documentary” , or maybe “solar panel self install”.

Jenny asks…
Does NASA track and keep records of the amount of solar energy radiating?
throughout the solar system? Do they record the fluctuations in energy levels? Have any parallels to Global Warming been made? Where can that information be obtained?
Do the temperature changes on Mars parallel those on Earth?

Alley answers:
I don’t think NASA does specifically, but there are a number of organizations which do.
Satellites have been monitoring solar activity since 1979. Over the past 31 years, solar activity has remained completely flat on average. Here’s the data:
http://www.acrim.com/RESULTS/Earth%20Observatory/earth_obs_fig27.pdf
Scientists have also put together data on solar activity from much further back using various proxies. For example, when there are more sunspots it also means there’s more solar activity, and people have been monitoring sunspot number for centuries. Here’s some longer-term data.
http://solar-center.stanford.edu/sun-on-earth/600px-Temp-sunspot-co2.svg.png
As you can see, the current global warming is clearly not being caused by the Sun, since solar activity has not increased in over 50 years. This is the conclusion of every scientific study on the subject.
We don’t have enough information about the temperature changes on Mars to compare them to those on Earth. We don’t even know for sure if Mars is warming, let alone how much. But we do know that the Sun isn’t causing global warming on Earth right now.

Sandy asks…
Does anyone know how much it would cost to install a solar energy system in a 3,200 sq foot house?

Alley answers:
Here’s some info regarding solar power:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_power
http://www.doe.gov/energysources/solar.htm
The US government has a website dedicated to helping people with alternative energy and such. See:
http://hes.lbl.gov/
If you click on the “Remodeling” link, you’re led here:
http://hes.lbl.gov/hes/makingithappen/nrr.html
There’s tons of information regarding solar energy, including financing information (there are grants and tax credits available for “going green.”)
There’s a purchasing link where you can find more info on cost, here:
http://hes.lbl.gov/hes/makingithappen/purchasing.html
Check out the information, and see what is available to you. You might also want to check out your local extension office, or other city resources for more options.
Good luck!

Chris asks…
Is it good to install hybrid wind & solar energy system for ur electric need at home light system. Is the resul

Alley answers:
Yes it is but only if your state will subsidize at least 30% of it and you live in a sunny state (that’s for solar). Wind is more predictable but it costs a bit more due to the wear and tear on the parts.

Lisa asks…
Does a solar electric (PV) system consume more energy to manufacture than it will produce in its lifetime?
I’ve seen several discussions on blogs regarding the net engergy gain (or loss) of solar systems. Some people claim it’s a net energy loss, but I have a hard time believing that to be true. Can anyone answer with either a credible source or facts that back up their answer? I’ve done a lot of searching and found very little to help me clear up this question. And please don’t mix financial information into this discussion, I’m only interested in the net ENERGY of solar electric (photovoltaic) systems.

Alley answers:
It is not simple to answer.
There are several different technologies
and many differnent working environments and load factors.
High-spec NASA pannels, clean room semiconductors, redundancy & destructive testing. And a short hostile life generating little useable power – perhaps the case could be made the are a net energy loss.
Organic (dye) photovoltaics, although having lower efficiencies, are much simpler to mass produce, so less net energy input
and in normal use should give ample life to give a positive energy gain. Unfortunaly still very much at development stage so no easy to read summaries
