Michael Your Questions About Creative Recreation

Michael asks…

If we shop for recreation does that mean we’re not very creative?

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Creative Recreation

Alley answers:

Yes.

When buying stuff becomes entertainment, you have cash management problems. You are just buying stuff to fill a desire. That desire will never be satiated with more stuff. And you risk doing it at the cost of your financial future.

You should have a budget for shopping, if you’re that way inclined. Set aside some of your income for saving and some of your income for shopping. That way, you don’t feel too deprived. Make sure you save 10% of your income, though.

Best wishes

Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Donald Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Donald asks…

Does you school require students to have laptop computers?

Does your college/university require/mandate for all students to have a laptop computer? If so, does the school recommend at particular brand of laptop computer?

Actually, my college does require/mandate for all students to have a laptop computer. The school recommends that all students to get a D620 notebook laptop computer, which I’ve recently ordered from the Dell (Computer) Corporation.
Sorry about the typo in the question topic headline. The typo being that I said “you”, when I actually meant to say “your” but I simply forgot to add in the letter ‘r’ even though I thought I had but didn’t.

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Alley answers:

Nope. They recommend Apple computers, though, as most of the school computers are Macs so it’s easier to integrate our computers with their systems.

I’m sure Dell payed your school payed a fair amount of money to recommend their laptops since there’s no reason it’s useful to have the same model of laptop as everyone else, just the same OS.

Mandy Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Mandy asks…

Are laptop computers bad for your health?

I have heard that men should not set laptops computers on their lap because their sperm can be damaged. Is that true? Do laptops have a negitive effect on women as well?

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Alley answers:

As a matter of fact, this is true. It was reported in a recent Reader’s Digest in their Medical Updates section. No, they don’t affect women. The issue was the heat generated by the laptop causing a drop in sperm production. It is not a theory, but a fact. Of course, like so many things, two years from now they may come out with a study that says it isn’t as bad as they once thought.

Susan Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Do commercial airlines have power available for passenger laptop computers?

I will be traveling on Korean Airlines this year to Asia and would like to be able to use my laptop during the long flight from the US. Does Korean Airlines have power ports available for passengers to use in-flight at their assigned seat? If so, do I need a special adapter to plug my computer into this power? What adapter will I need? Thank you!

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Donna Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Donna asks…

2 questions regarding laptop computers on airlines?

I have a few questions regarding laptop computers on airlines. First, do they have a power source available (can you plug it in or must you rely solely on your battery)? Second, is there some sort of Internet access available in flight? I haven’t ridden a plane since before the computer age!

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Alley answers:

Some airlines have a few power sources on some of their larger aircraft (that are generally used for longer flights) but generally there isn’t on most airplanes. As far as internet access, there isn’t on the plane and actually they will tell you to disable the wireless feature on your laptop before you take off. Most airport terminals do have wireless access though, and a few power outlets in the terminal, but often you have to pay a fee (it’s not free wireless in a lot of airports it’s like $5-8 usually for up to 24 hours of access, but chances are you’ll only have time to be using it for a few minutes so it’s not worth paying for).

Mary Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Mary asks…

How to replace the RTC battery in laptop computers?

my laptop (toshiba, satellite 1405) is getting old and the real time clock battery is no longer rechargeable. so everytime I turn on the computer, the system clock is always changed back to 1999. I was wondering if I can change the battery myself, or do I have to take it to a computer store (and how much would that cost)? I heard that the RTC battery is a small button-like battery and is really cheap, but I didn’t see it when I opened the back of the laptop. Any idea? thanks a lot for your help.

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Laptop Computers

Alley answers:

That battery looks like a big watch battery and they are pretty cheap. Usually they are located on the mainboard of the computer somewhere. On a laptop that’s likely deep inside it’s belly and hard to get at. You could try to take it apart further, just remember where all the screws go.

Sounds like you might need a new laptop. By brother got one for free from this place. There are a couple to choose from and they aren’t crappy ones. I’m working on getting mine right now. It’s not too difficult. Pretty painless really. Just sign up for 1 free trial or something from their list of things and then get a few other people to do the same.

Your Questions About Solar Energy Systems

Lizzie Your Questions About Solar Energy Systems

which is the best solar energy system to install for both domestic & comercial purpose and where can I get it?

I need specifications, catalogues, wiring diagrams, manufacturing/retails outlets,

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Solar Energy Systems

Alley answers:

This is not a simple thing that a do-it-yourselfer can just do without a lot of study and work. Your best bet is probably to contact a solar installer near you and ask them for a free quote. In fact, contact several, and get competitive bids.

If you are still intent on trying it yourself, try Googling “photovoltaic documentary” , or maybe “solar panel self install”.

Jenny Your Questions About Solar Energy Systems

Jenny asks…

Does NASA track and keep records of the amount of solar energy radiating?

throughout the solar system? Do they record the fluctuations in energy levels? Have any parallels to Global Warming been made? Where can that information be obtained?
Do the temperature changes on Mars parallel those on Earth?

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Solar Energy Systems

Alley answers:

I don’t think NASA does specifically, but there are a number of organizations which do.

Satellites have been monitoring solar activity since 1979. Over the past 31 years, solar activity has remained completely flat on average. Here’s the data:

http://www.acrim.com/RESULTS/Earth%20Observatory/earth_obs_fig27.pdf

Scientists have also put together data on solar activity from much further back using various proxies. For example, when there are more sunspots it also means there’s more solar activity, and people have been monitoring sunspot number for centuries. Here’s some longer-term data.

http://solar-center.stanford.edu/sun-on-earth/600px-Temp-sunspot-co2.svg.png

As you can see, the current global warming is clearly not being caused by the Sun, since solar activity has not increased in over 50 years. This is the conclusion of every scientific study on the subject.

We don’t have enough information about the temperature changes on Mars to compare them to those on Earth. We don’t even know for sure if Mars is warming, let alone how much. But we do know that the Sun isn’t causing global warming on Earth right now.

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Solar Energy Systems

Yes it is but only if your state will subsidize at least 30% of it and you live in a sunny state (that’s for solar). Wind is more predictable but it costs a bit more due to the wear and tear on the parts.

Lisa Your Questions About Solar Energy Systems

Lisa asks…

Does a solar electric (PV) system consume more energy to manufacture than it will produce in its lifetime?

I’ve seen several discussions on blogs regarding the net engergy gain (or loss) of solar systems. Some people claim it’s a net energy loss, but I have a hard time believing that to be true. Can anyone answer with either a credible source or facts that back up their answer? I’ve done a lot of searching and found very little to help me clear up this question. And please don’t mix financial information into this discussion, I’m only interested in the net ENERGY of solar electric (photovoltaic) systems.

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Solar Energy Systems

Alley answers:

It is not simple to answer.
There are several different technologies
and many differnent working environments and load factors.

High-spec NASA pannels, clean room semiconductors, redundancy & destructive testing. And a short hostile life generating little useable power – perhaps the case could be made the are a net energy loss.

Organic (dye) photovoltaics, although having lower efficiencies, are much simpler to mass produce, so less net energy input
and in normal use should give ample life to give a positive energy gain. Unfortunaly still very much at development stage so no easy to read summaries

Your Questions About Spectrum Health

Lizzie Your Questions About Spectrum Health

Lizzie asks…

what would help with goldfish health?

I have a 7″ and two four inch goldfish that were in a pond that leaked. There had been lots of snails and more plants in the larger 50 gallon pond. I moved them to a somewhat warmer but smaller (5 galllon) tank 48 hours ago. The large goldfish has some scales missing, and all are breathing with some effort. Last night I started the tank on broad spectrum antibiotics for both gram positive and negative bacteria (Mardel’s Maracyn and Maracyn-Two.) Since these presumably will kill desired bacteria as well as undesired and may lead to an increase in fungus in the tank/fish, willI I need to treat with a fungicide next? Or would refreshed natural pond water and/or acidophilus be better?
This morning I see the smaller two grazing, but not the big one. The water was high in alkalinity and ph, so I changed 25% of the water and the chemistry is all acceptable now . Should I get more snails or plants back in? Other suggestions?

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Spectrum Health

Alley answers:

The problem most likely is ammonia build up. Three fairly large goldfish in a 5 gallon tank is overstocked. The waste produced by the fish is quickly converted into ammonia, which is toxic to the fish. Without a filter, they have almost no chance. The benificial bacteria will not be able to culture fast enough without a filter, and even with a filter, three large goldfish in a 5 gallon tank, the filter would still be overwhelmed. The heavy breathing is probably due to ammonia or nitrite burns of the gill tissue, making it difficult for the fish to ‘breathe’. When you say the water chemistry is all acceptable, what exactly are you talking about? Did you test for Ammonia, NitrIte or NitrAte? These parameters are probably the most important. If you want to save these fish, get them into a larger tank asap.

Mary Your Questions About Spectrum Health

Mary asks…

Racist Health Care? where im from in queens ny, poor provision of health care is very prevalent. ?

I came across this article. Do you feel that this could be a case of racism in the health care industry? Can you relate to this? Let me know how you feel about this unethical issue.

“[Racism remains a] prime cause of the unequal and racially discriminatory provision of funds for health services; of the over-crowding of the ill- equipped black hospitals and the underutilization of white hospitals; of miserable housing, gross pollution, poor sanitation, and lack of health care . . . . [Racism] in consequence, is the underlying structure causing the dreadful burden of excess morbidity and mortality, much of it preventable, that is borne by the black population. These health-specific effects are superimposed on the more general consequences of [racism] which bars the majority of [African-american] citizens from participating in decisions on the allocation of resources for health or other needs. We believe that the . . . [American] health care system is, in consequence, fundamentally flawed. Fragmentation and duplication of services . . . . is costly and inefficient. . . . For the majority of the black population, the whole spectrum of health services (but most urgently, primary care) is inadequate. Entire generations suffer through much of their life-times. . . . Even if. . . [racism] ended tomorrow, their effects on health would persist for [generations], in part because of the health consequences of the profound poverty . . . that [racism] itself has engendered and in part because widespread attitudes that encourage racism, elitism, sexism, a colonialist mentality, and prejudice against the poor take time and commitment to change. . . Clearly, . . . [America] has the ability to reduce markedly, if not eliminate, the serious health problems that exist among the black population. It can, if it chooses, eliminate the institutionalized system of racism and discrimination that have made the country, for decades, a symbol of human rights violations. The task facing. . . [us] is to continue to extend the process that [civil rights reforms] have begun, until profound and lasting improvements in health care . . . are a reality.” Elena Nightingale, et al., Apartheid Medicine: Health and Human Rights in South Africa, 264 J.A.M.A. 2097, 2102 (1990). This quote is taken from an article about South Africa with merely name changes from South Africa to the U.S. and Apartheid to Racism, it is equally true about the United States of America.

Lisa Your Questions About Spectrum Health

Lisa asks…

Are broad-spectrum antiinfectives more prone to cause “superinfections”?

I just want to be sure that if a patient is on a broad spectrum like Amoxicillin, the health care provider will be on a higher alert for superinfection than, if the patient were on a gram negative antiinfective such as gentamicin.

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Spectrum Health

Alley answers:

Whether or not it’s a broad spectrum antibiotic has little to do with the potential to cause “superinfections”. Amoxicillin is pretty low on the food chain as far as antibiotics go, and many bacteria can be or become resistant to it. Depending on what disease they’re trying to treat, Amoxicillin can be the best choice (for instance: Strep Throat). Gentamicin is only effective against certain gram negative organisms, such as E. Coli, which causes urinary tract infections. Gentamicin would usually only be given after a culture is performed with tests to ensure that it is susceptible to the drug.

In order to prevent superbugs, all doctors have a lab perform cultures with sensitivity tests to be sure the antibiotic works against that strain. Doctors will usually follow up care of the patient, and every hospital is required to have an infection control committee which keeps an eye on all bugs with unusual resistances.

As a patient, the best way to prevent resistant infections is to always finish the antibiotics your doctor gives you, even if you’re feeling better. If a bug is a little bit resistant, you want to be sure to kill it rather than just weaken it and let it grow back.

Does anyone else find school’s health curriculum to be homophobic?

I was sitting in health class the other day, and I realized we only talked about guy/girl interactions. Then, when we talked about sex, she said don’t have oral, anal, etc.

Paul Your Questions About Spectrum Health

Paul asks…

Why is children’s mental health so widely disagreed on?

EAch doctor see something else, labels it one thing (adhd) another doctor says aspenger (low spectrum autism) another bipolar, another odd or conduct disorder. all with the same titles and education. How do you ever really know what is wrong with your child? And how do you make sure your child is getting the correct treatment is the diagnose is so different?
Is their a test that can watch brain activity, to see if something is wrong with the way a brain is suppose to work?

lizard surf Rev 80x80 Your Questions About Spectrum Health

Alley answers:

Diagnosing a mental illness is often very difficult, because there are so many variables, especially with children. With children under 18 some behavior is appropriate at one age but then most out grow it. Mental health issues are NOT an exact science like most or at leastt many physical illnesses.
Occasionallyy there are blood test or MRI but not usually. And let face it with younger children they often have some trouble expressing how they are feeling.
As far as the best diagnosis, I would go to the best psychiatrist that you can find, one that specializes in children- youchild’sd’s age. I would not take a child to a general pract. For a psych. Evaluation-they just do not have enough experience or training to stick a label on your child for life. Most doctors are reluctant to give a BiPolar diagnosis until well past 18 yrs. If I can answer any other specific questions please email me. God Bless REGGIE
