Your Questions About Mac Computers

Lizzie asks…
Why are Mac computers so hard to learn and work with?
Mac mail won’t work. Can’t find out pass word. The Mac won’t send or receive pictures. Paid 2,000 dollars for a computer that can’t work as well as my 500 dollar 10 year old computer from gateway. Mac computers are the worse computers on the earth.
I’m a fool for buying a Mac. No support from the people who sold it to me.
No support from Apple. Takes 45 minutes to get someone on the phone. Then when they answer they can’t help. ( Can’t understand foreign people)

If that is too much to read they have videos that will give you the basics as well.

Daniel asks…
does xbox live work in a household that is entirely mac computers?
i recently purchased xbox live for my xbox. im curious and somewhat worried as to if it will work with my mac computers, since we dont have any pc computers. will it work? and if it does work is there anything i have to do on my computer?
i have a wireless router by the way

Alley answers:
Your xbox will not even know there are macs in the house. All it needs to know is the gateway (the address of your router) from which to get its DHCP info (you can also configure manually if you want). The computers will not interfere with XBL.
You can set up a media share on one of your computers and play mp3s/movies on your XBox, but this function is unrelated to XBL.

Steven asks…
How to sync one email on multiple computers (Microsoft Outlook & Mac Mail)?
My dad has one email address. He is able to view all his incoming emails from other people on both computers. However, he isn’t able to view his sent emails. For example: If he views an email from another person and sends a response to the person on the Mac computer (which has Mac Mail), he isn’t able to view that sent email on the other computer (the PC – which has Microsoft Outlook).
Is there a way to do that? View all sent emails on both computers? Or is it impossible to sync Microsoft Outlook and Mac Mail?

Alley answers:
All email programs are independent. There is no way to synchronize sent email with a pop3 account which is what Yahoo offers. If you set the account options to leave mail on the server you can receive the same mail in each program. In that case they must be deleted from the server online.
If you are not using Yahoo and have an email service that uses IMAP then I do believe sent mail can be synchronized but I am not experienced with it.

Susan asks…
Can you play Sims 3 on other computers instead of Mac?
I have seen ads to get the game for Mac computers and Iphone and Itouch. If i dont have any of those i can still play it on a PC. This must sound stupid but i dont want to buy the game if i cant play it with out buying a new computer such as a mac.

Alley answers:
1. (to the other IDIOTS answering this) It is made for Macs. They’ve already /made/ a Mac version. Do your research.
2. Yes, it is actually made for PCs and Macs, since everyone has their own personal preference of OS.
This is a great website to “direct download” and “system check” (to make sure your computer supports it) but the Direct Download only works for PCs….sims3.com
Happy Simming!

Chris asks…
Why are MAC computers so much more money then regular ones? What makes them any different?
I have always wanted to get a MAC computer, but they are just too much money for a computer. I have found some laptops that have the same qualities, but the MAC is almost twice the price. Can anyone tell me why this is?

Alley answers:
Macs are pretty reliable, but mechanically, they are NOT any more reliable than other top tier names like a good dell studio and XPS series, falcoln northwest, alienware or hp. However compared to off-branded PC’s like acer, gateway or other no name brands, yes they are more reliable.
A REAL claim to greater reliability may only be made if you consider how many third party software aps and hardware drivers there are. MAC is a monopoly. You can only write a mac ap or make mac accessories if you PAY A LICENSING FEE, which most “off brands” aren’t going to do. Subsequently, third party mac accessories DO tend to be a little better.
Part of what you’re paying for is moving to the top shelf with the rest of the “good” brand names. Apple IS a top tier name. Apple tech support is a LITTLE better than MOST PC tech support, but it is still really bad.
The reason why macs are expensive is because youre paying for :
1. The name
2. The pretty logo
3. Some of the best ergonomics and industrial design in the business
4. Apple is a monopoly so there is NO competitive discounting.
You will also pay more to upgrade
pay more to repair
pay more for accessories
pay more for software although you can run just about anything with bootcamp.
“CC of oz” is completely wrong. Macs can and do get viruses. It’s just that fewer people write viruses for macs because the “target” is a smaller audience. Microsoft spends much more time and money being proactive and hiring “white hats”. There are several mac exploits that have been known about for months now that have not been patched or updated. As of this writing, there is currently one HUGE hole that has been known for months, but little time and money is being spent to fix it
Macs did tend to be a little faster in the old days because they were using reduced instruction set (RISC motorola) hardware. Now days they are use intel chips and are about the same as PC. In the old days animation used to be rendered on macs, now animation and movies are now made on HP’s and Dells. Most scientific work is done on mainframes, but there are alot of very powerful XPS, poweredge and precision workstations at our “national labs” and military bases because mainframe time scheduling is very premium.
